Pradaxa (dabigatran) is a blood thinner belongs to the direct thrombin inhibitor class of drugs. It was approved by the FDA in 2010 to reduce the risk of strokes and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation, which is a heart condition where the atria, or upper chambers of the heart, do not fully contract. This can result in stagnant blood and the potential formation of blood clots.
Coumadin (warfarin), low molecular weight heparin, or aspirin were common drugs used to prevent blood clots before Pradaxa was released. Warfarin was the most commonly prescribed anticoagulant for patients with atrial fibrillation, but it requires testing to ensure the correct dosing. Over- or under-anticoagulation is a common problem with patients who are given warfarin.
Now a popular alternative, Pradaxa is given in a fixed dose and has proven to be more quickly effective than warfarin. When it was first released, Pradaxa was received with great enthusiasm. Now, however, Pradaxa has been shown to increase the risk of serious and potentially fatal side effects.
Pradaxa Side Effects
Pradaxa has proven to heighten the risk of a number of dangerous side effects. In recent studies, it was found that users of Pradaxa are at a 33% higher risk of suffering a heart attack or developing symptoms of heart disease than atrial fibrillation patients who are prescribed warfarin. In addition to heart problems, Pradaxa side effects may include:
- Joint swelling and joint pain
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Internal bleeding
Pradaxa internal bleeding and other side effects have been the reported cause of more than 260 deaths worldwide since the drug was introduced in 2010. Patients who use Pradaxa need to be aware of signs of internal bleeding, such as:
- Unusual bleeding
- Bleeding that lasts an abnormally long time
- Coughing up blood
- Bloody stools or stools that look like coffee grounds
- Vomiting blood
- Urine that is brown or pink
- Joint pain
