About Pradaxa

Pradaxa (dabigatran) is a blood thinner belongs to the direct thrombin inhibitor class of drugs.  It was approved by the FDA in 2010 to reduce the risk of strokes and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation, which is a heart condition where the atria, or upper chambers of the heart, do not fully contract.  This can result in stagnant blood and the potential formation of blood clots.

Coumadin (warfarin), low molecular weight heparin, or aspirin were common drugs used to prevent blood clots before Pradaxa was released.  Warfarin was the most commonly prescribed anticoagulant for patients with atrial fibrillation, but it requires testing to ensure the correct dosing.  Over- or under-anticoagulation is a common problem with patients who are given warfarin.

Now a popular alternative, Pradaxa is given in a fixed dose and has proven to be more quickly effective than warfarin.  When it was first released, Pradaxa was received with great enthusiasm.  Now, however, Pradaxa has been shown to increase the risk of serious and potentially fatal side effects.
