Pradaxa Internal Bleeding

A hemorrhage, also known as internal bleeding, is caused when a blood vessel breaks and blood subsequently leaks from the circulatory system.  Internal bleeding in the brain, lungs, and heart is especially dangerous, but other parts of the body can also be subject to damaging internal bleeding, which is fatal in some cases.

Patients who take a blood thinner such as Pradaxa are at an especially high risk of internal bleeding, and even a seemingly minor injury can cause substantial blood loss.  Doctors who prescribe anticoagulants need to carefully evaluate the benefits of these drugs in relation to the risk of internal bleeding, and dosing needs to be carefully monitored.

Pradaxa Cerebral (Brain) Hemorrhage

A cerebral hemorrhage, or bleeding on the brain, is a type of stroke that may be caused by Pradaxa and other blood thinners.  Symptoms of internal bleeding in the brain may include sudden headaches, speech that is slurred, tingling or numbness, changes in vision, decline in motor skills, changes in the sense of taste, and loss of consciousness.  Cerebral hemorrhage may cause brain swelling, hematomas, and compromised blood flow to the brain, which may be permanently detrimental or fatal.

Pradaxa Pulmonary (Lung) Hemorrhage

Bleeding in the lungs often indicates bleeding in other organs and can cause respiratory failure and death.  This type of internal bleeding needs to be treated immediately, and signs of lung hemorrhage may include bloody noses or bloody fluid oozing from other places, blue skin or lips, decline in respiration, and shock.

Pradaxa Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage

Internal bleeding to the gastrointestinal area is an unfortunately common Pradaxa side effect.  The source of internal bleeding and the amount of blood lost determines the severity of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage, which may lead to a deficiency in red blood cells, organ damage, shock, and death.  Signs of gastrointestinal internal bleeding may include bloody stools or stools that look like coffee grounds, weakness, abdominal pain, vomiting blood, and fatigue.

Pradaxa Retinal Hemorrhage

A Pradaxa retinal hemorrhage occurs when blood vessels in the retina become so filled with blood that they burst.  This could lead to blurred vision, floaters, flashes of light, or other forms of visual impairment including blindness.  Often, retinal hemorrhages can be treated with a laser, but in some cases surgery is necessary.
